Southern Miss English Professor Wins Prize for Poetry
Hattiesburg—University of Southern Mississippi
English professor Angela Ball, Ph.D., recently won the Ekphrasis
Prize (“Ekphrasis” means art about art) from Ekphrasis
magazine for a poem she wrote about Pierre Bonnard's painting, The
Bath. The prize includes $500 and publication of the poem in the
prize issue this fall.
Ball also recently won a prestigious national award, the AWP Donald
Hall Prize, for a collection of her poetry titled “Night Clerk at
the Hotel of Both Worlds.”
Ball read the poem as part of a special collaboration with the
Southern Miss Department of Art in May, along with her Department
of English colleague Julia Johnson. Johnson and Ball each wrote
six poems about paintings, which they read together in May during
an event at the Southern Miss Art Gallery.
DuBard School at Southern Miss Offering National Certification
for Association Method
Hattiesburg—The DuBard School for Language
Disorders at the University of Southern Mississippi is now offering
national certification in the Association Method. The Association
Method is a phonetic, multisensory structured language therapy approach
for those with speech, language, and hearing disabilities, including
disorders of oral and written language (dyslexia). Professionals
using the Association Method in educational, therapeutic, or work
settings may be eligible for this national certification, which
is based on academic course work and practicum in the Association
Method.
Association Method Certification is designed to promote intensive,
high-quality Multisensory Structured Language Education (MSLE) training
for teachers and therapists of individuals who are challenged with
language-learning differences and other related disorders such as

Southern Miss Graduates and Professor Chosen for Leadership
Roles by State CPA Society
Hattiesburg—The Mississippi Society of Certified
Public Accountants (MSCPA) has elected two University of Southern
Mississippi alumni and a professor emeritus as officers for the
coming year.
Linda Bounds Keng, a 1977 Southern Miss accounting graduate, was
elected president of MSCPA. Keng is an attorney with Watkins Ludlam
Winter and Stennis, PA of Jackson, one of the oldest and largest
law firms in the state.
Professor James R. Crockett was elected treasurer. Crockett was
named the Outstanding Accounting Educator for 2005 by the MSCPA.
After joining the Southern Miss faculty in 1987, Crockett served
11 years as director of the Southern Miss School of Professional
Accountancy
Elected as secretary of MSCPA, Karen C. Moody, of Lampton-Love
Inc. in Richland, is a 1981 Southern Miss accounting graduate. The
MSCPA recently selected Moody as a CPA Ambassador to promote the
profession within the state.
