| HATTIESBURG – Laura Read,
a University of Southern Mississippi senior from Hattiesburg,
is the 2005 recipient of the Mississippi Young Bankers (MYB)
Leadership Scholarship award.
Each year the MYB committee, a sector of the Mississippi Bankers
Association, rewards $1,000 to a standout Mississippi college
student majoring in banking and finance.
Southern Miss finance professor James Lindley nominated Read
for the honor. Lindley describes the Oak Grove High School graduate
as a natural born leader who is both outgoing and friendly.
“I’m grateful for Mississippi Young Bankers for choosing me
for this award. It’s an honor to be recognized and to bring
that recognition back to Southern Miss,” said Read.
Read is also a 2005-06 Center for Financial Services scholar.
Additional honors include being named a Forrest General Hospital
Scholar Athlete and an induction into the Beta Gamma Sigma and
Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. She’s also served as a Southern
Miss cheerleader and United Way Fun Day coordinator.
Read, the daughter of Randy and Susan, plans to pursue a master’s
degree in finance upon graduation in 2006. Read said she eventually
wants to work in some area of forensic accounting or start her
own business.
The Mississippi Young Bankers Leadership Scholarship has been
given since 1998. The mission of the scholarship is to not only
give students a pat on the back, but to encourage students to
pursue banking careers in Mississippi.
