HATTIESBURG- Cory Horton, a junior at the University
of Southern Mississippi, recently attended the 20th Annual National
Conference on Ethics in America at the United States Military
Academy in West Point, NY.
A native of Bolton, Horton was chosen because of his outstanding
involvement on campus. Horton, finance major with an emphasis
in real estate, currently serves as director of Student Initiatives
for the Student Government Association and is a member of Men
of Excellence, AASO, NAACP and the National Association of Realtors.
“Cory's selection to the West Point Leadership Academy speaks
volumes about the quality of our students at Southern Miss,”
said Dean of Students Dr. Eddie Holloway. “He has anchored himself
as a campus leader and is highly involved in campus activities.
I am proud of his tenacity and will to accomplish his goals.”
During his time at West Point from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, Horton
participated in panel speaking, small group discussions and
prepared a mock set of rules to govern a college with an honor
code.
Lt. Col. David Jones, U.S. Army, and Jacob Jordan, Cadet Capt.,
organized the conference, which had several goals. It was first
designed to give the students a chance to discuss and exchange
different views and ideas. “The students are given the opportunity
to review and redefine codes, programs and ethics of colleges,”
Jones said.
Horton said he was humbled to be chosen as a delegate to the
National Conference on Ethics at the United States Military
Academy. “It was truly an honor to represent our University
to others from around the nation,” Horton said. “I learned so
much that I am glad to bring back to Southern Miss.”
